Archaeology Notes

NX08SE 10 c. 082 824.

(Area NX 082 824) Several probably late Larnian shell mounds existed near the mouth of the R Stinchar. One must have been a sizable feature to have dictated the name Shell Knowe for a group of houses at NX 082 824.

Name Book 1854; A D Lacaille 1946; A D Lacaille 1954.

There is no evidence of a shell mound here. The name 'Shell Knowe' applies to an area of small work-shops etc, with a rubbish dump on its west side. The area is flat and only slightly raised above the adjoining haughland.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 10 December 1970.
