Archaeology Notes

NX05NE 21 07199 56577

(Location cited as NX 072 565). Lochans Mill, 19th century. A small two-storey range, in rubble and slate, formerly a meal mill dating from the late 18th century. Wheel at the side is of cast iron, three-section, six spoke on cast-iron axle, 12ft (3.66m) diameter by 4 1/2 ft (1.37m) wide. It has cogged drive from the rime. It was high-breastshot to wooden paddles. Stone supports at the side have carried the lade to the wheel. The mill is now gutted and used as a byre; there is no internal machinery.

I Donnachie 1971; J R Hume 1976.
