Archaeology Notes

NX04SE 8 0965 4263.

There is an artificial mound in the garden at Logan House (NX 0965 4282). It is 7'-10' high and 16'-17' in diameter on the top. Around the base there is a narrow terrace, and hollows visible on the surface of the lawn and paths adjacent possibly indicate the previous existence of a ditch. In such a situation it is not possible to estimate the amount of disturbance which the mound itself and its surrounding levels may have undergone over the years. It is steeply scarped but seems too small to have been a motte.

RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911

This mound could not be identified and the owner of Logan House has no knowledge of it.

Visited by OS (RD) 31 January 1972

An egg-shaped mound (12.5m from WNW to SSE by 9m transversely and 2.2m high), composed of earth and stone, is situated 180m S of Logan House; It is known as the 'Tree Fern Mound' and is a garden feature.

R C Reid 1925; RCAHMS 1912; 1985, visited August 1984

This is presumably the 'Possible cairn disturbed by garden development' that Stevenson notes.
