Archaeology Notes

NW95NE 9 c. 981 564

(Area: NW 981 564) 'At Killantringan, on Blackness, was once a chapel dedicated to St Ninian.'

E M H M'Kerlie 1916

Watson states that this dedication to St Ninian probably dates from the 12th century, but W Nicolaisen (School of Scottish Studies) is of the opinion that the element 'Kil' went out of use about AD 850. (Information from A MacDonald, MoPBW, 10 August 1967)

W J Watson 1926

Site not located. No further information.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 February 1968

The words used to form the name 'Killantringan' indicate 12th- or 13th- century date. It possibly indicates the site of a chapel erected for the use of pilgrims on their way to Whithorn in the period from the 12th to the 16th century.

J MacQueen 1973

A chapel dedicated to St Ninian is said to have stood at Killantringan.

H Scott 1915-61; E M H M'Kerlie 1916; RCAHMS 1985, visited (IMS) August 1984.
