Archaeology Notes

NC71NE 28 77 15.

In June 1589, James Sinclair of Murkle, the Earl of Caithness' brother, crossed the Sutherland border in the heights of Strath Kildonan, and in Strathbrora began to drive off cattle; but the Sutherland men, under Houcheon MacKay, overtook them at Crissaligh, and in the skirmish that followed, Sinclair's forces were driven back across the border.

A MacKay 1914; R Gordon 1813.

It is probable that this conflict took place at Crioslach (NC 7777 1570), but no further information was encountered.

Visited by OS (WD J) 13 July 1961.
