Archaeology Notes

NT95NW 10 c 949 595.

The fort of Cairnchester existed near the farm steading of that name (A A Carr 1836) which is shown on high ground about 1,000 yds. N of Habchester fort (NT95NW 4) on a map of 1826. (T Sharp, C Greenwood

and W Fowler 1826).

J H Craw 1921.

Cairnchester steading was situated in the area NT 949 595 (Information from Plan of the estate of Ayton, 1816, held in Register House, Edinburgh). There is no fort in the area and this reference probably applies to that on Chester Hill (NT96SE 1) No indications on air photographs.

Visited by OS(RD) 15 September 1970.
