Archaeology Notes

NT86NW 6 NT 82963 65417

(NT 829 654) Circular enclosure, situated in 'Camps Field'. (Visible on air photographs OS 65.2: 681-2).

Information from OS recorder (GSL) 13 December 1965.

NT 8291 6541. The large cropmark visible on these air photographs is possibly a water mark around the base of a low hillock. However, on top of this hillock, at NT 8294 6541, is an oval depression measuring 25.0m NW-SE by 21.0m transversely and about 0.5m deep, which may represent the site of a small enclosure. The site has been recently ploughed.

Visited by OS (WDJ), 2 February 1966.

Cropmarks reveal an enclosure, possibly a settlement, situated on a low knoll 800m SE of Renton Barns; it is roughly circular on plan, measuring about 60m in diameter within a ditch 3m broad.

RCAHMS 1980, flown 1976.

Scheduled as 'Atton, settlement 570m N of... visible as a cropmark... located 160m above sea-level on the crest of a small rise, part of the SW-facing slope of Bell Hill [and] overlooking the Eye Water.'

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 4 March 2009.
