(NT 8432 7011 - NT 8517 6954) Soldiers Dyke (NAT) (Site of)

OS 6"map, Berwickshire, 1st ed., (1856).

The track of a fence, said to have been the boundary of the grounds attached to Fast Castle. The foundation was 6ft across; it was faced with stone and filled with rubble. It is situated on Dulaw farm, and in some places new fences have been erected on the foundations of the old wall.

Name Book 1856.

The "Soldier's Dyke" is generally as described in the ONB. It was almost certainly the march dyke or park pale of Fast Castle, the eastern boundary following the Dowlaw Burn.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS(RD) 4 March 1966.

Little survives of the "Soldier's Dyke"; it is best preserved W of Lowries Knowes where it is 1.5m thick.

Though it is said to be a boundary associated with Fast Castle, its date and purpose are unknown.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1979.
