NT85NW 8.01 80435 56796 Walled Garden

(NT 8031 5668) Broom House (NAT) on site of Peel (NR)

OS 6"map, (1957).

Broom House was built in 1813 on the site of (NSA [A Cuthbertson],1845) including the walls of (R G Johnston and H H Cowan 1952) an old peel tower. Several skeletons were found when digging the foundations.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845

Broom House is entirely modern externally, no trace of ancient walls being visible. On the N wall is an inscribed tablet: 'This house was built on the site of the ancient castle....1813.'

Visited by OS (JFC) 31 December 1954.

Broom House is now a ruin and is shortly to be pulled down. (Information from Mr Gillies, gamekeeper, Broomhouse Mains). There is no evidence of any earlier structure within the fabric.

The fabric of the existing 19th century building shows no evidence of earlier work.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1979.

Broom House and walled garden are visible on large scale vertical air photographs (OS 70/364/034 and 71/050/264-6, flown 1970 and 1971).

Broom House has been demolished. Not to be confused with a new Broom House which now stands to the E of the original site (NT 80422 56688).

NMRS REFERENCE:

An Adam type chimney piece was removed to the music room of Edron House, Berwickshire when Broomhouse was sold by the Logan-Home family
