Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The market cross at Swinton stands in the centre of the village green. It dates from 1769.

Standing on a circular stepped base, the cross consists of a cylindrical pillar set on a rectangular plinth and topped by a decorative square block or finial, which has a carving of a boar upon one face.

The boar has a particular association with Swinton. The Swinton family, who have been associated with the area for over 900 years, have the wild boar featured in their coat-of-arms.
