Sources record the destruction of a 'bastile' at a site called 'Mykyll Swinton' in 1482.
Bastles were a type of fortified house characteristic of the Borders region. This particular example appears to have been destroyed during an invasion of Scotland led by Alexander, Duke of Albany. Following his exile by his brother, King James III, Albany returned to Scotland with an English army, resulting in the first major invasion of Scotland to take place for over 80 years.
