Boundary Dyke, Bowmonthill. Near spot-level 520, on the line of the Border W of Bowmont Hill, there can be seen a row of fourteen large boulders stated by Mack (J L Mack 1924), to have been "so placed to indicate the March". Armstrong's map of 1769 likewise notes "The Dike appears Plain here" along this section of the Border. The boulders are foundation-stones or orthostats displaced from the dyke separating the planted strip from the cultivated field to the SW. This dyke, which is
a massive one, does in fact mark the Border, but there is nothing to show that it was built specifically for that purpose. Cf. RCAHMS 1956 No.1077 (Roxburgh 11 SE 5)
RCAHMS 1956, visited 17 October 1945.
These boulders were located at NT 8289 3100, placed erratically along a line some 12.0m long, 2.0m NE of the fence which now marks the Border at this point. They have been displaced from the original boundary bank which lies within the English side of the Border.
Visited by OS(RD) 29 July 1966.
