Archaeology Notes

NT83SW 14 8023 3183.

(NT 8023 3183) Chapel (NR) (Site of).

OS 6"map, Roxburghshire, (1923).

No structural remains survive of the chapel at Hoselaw.

The site is now occupied by a modern memorial-chapel.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 3 July 1932.

The modern Hoselaw Chapel lies about 100m. SW of the OS site. Air Photograph investigation shows slight marks at the OS site that could well be the site of a chapel.

Visible on RAF air photographs 106G/UK 765: 4030-1, flown 1945.

Hoselaw Chapel was dedicated to St Machuit (Fasti Eccles Scot, H Scott et al ed. 1917). The modern chapel bears a brass plaque stating that it stands near the site of the old chapel (J F Leishman 1910).

At one time the outline of the chapel was visible on Chapelknowe, about 100 yards E of a large sycamore still visible in 1910.

Hist Berwickshire Natur Club 1913 (Reports).

The ancient chapel of Hoselaw, an appanage of the Abbey of Kelso since 1421, stood c 100 yds NW of the present chapel, dedicated in 1906. The RCAHMS 1956 is incorrect.

No remains of an earlier structure were found when digging the foundations of the modern chapel. (Information from Miss M Somervail, Hoselaw, nr Kelso, Roxburgh).

Visited by OS(RD) 20 July 1966.
