Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 9 from 84187 21385 to 84192 21373

(Centred NT 84187 21379) Tumuli (NR) (Three shown)

OS 6" map, Roxburghshire, (1923).

(NT 84187 21379) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, (1962).

A dilapidated oval cairn, 36' E-W by 21' and 3'6" high, stands on the summit of Hairny Law. It has been used as a quarry for a sheep stell 3 yds to the S; its top has been dug into and the E end has been entirely removed. The OS map of 1923 marks two other "tumuli" 100 and 150 yds N of this cairn, but these are both natural. The two cairns marked on the E side of the hill are modern.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1938.

The cairn is as described. The two other 'tumuli', low insignificant mounds of grass-covered stones about 3.0m in diameter and 0.1m high, are not natural as suggested by the RCAHMS, but different in character from the cairn. They are possibly field clearance heaps.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 18 August 1960.

No change to previous information.

Visited by OS (TRG) 12 August 1976.

On the gentle top of Hairny Law, a spur on the S side of Blakedean Curr, there are the remains of an oval cairn which had been robbed in the construction of the adjacent circular sheepfold on the S. The cairn which measures 13m from E to W by 9.3m and stands up to 1.3m high, is considerably more substantial than the clearance cairns scattered over the top of the Law (NT82SW 244).
