Archaeology Notes

NT82NW 12 8142 2843.

(NT 8142 2843) Shields and Spearheads found (NAT).

OS 6"map, Roxburghshire, (1933).

Bronze Age Shields found (NAT).

OS 6"map, (1962).

Two Late Bronze Age shields were found in digging a drain in a marshy field in 1837, and another during ploughing in 1869, apparently in the same field, part of Yetholm Bog, a large lake which had been drained about 1830.

The Commission suggest that the shields may have formed a votive deposit. They were dated by Coles to 'hardly earlier than the 8th century BC'

The shields found in 1837 were purchased for the NMAS in 1863 (DN 1 and 2) and the other was loaned by the Tweedside Physical and Antiquarian Society in 1933 (L 1933.2114).

(No authority can be found for the discovery of the spearheads).

J M Coles 1962; W T M'Culloch 1865; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1871 (Exhibits); RCAHMS 1956.

No further information can be found locally.
