(NT 7353 7356) Thornton Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1959)

Thornton Castle first appears on record in 1502 when it belonged to John Montgomery. Miller, quoting a contemporary account of its siege, says that it was blown up in 1640. 'A fragment of one of the arches which supported the first floor' stood until about 1800 but no trace of the castle now remains.

Name Book 1853; J Miller 1830

Only a few loose stones remain to indicate the site of the castle.
