Archaeology Notes

NT77SW 16 c. 707 728.

(Approx NT 707 728) A cist was found towards the end of December 1939 when ploughing in a field called Langly at Thurston Mains. The find spot is on a crest, about 480ft OD, 400 yds SW of the farmhouse; there is a steep drop 15 yds away on the S to the Thurston Mains Burn. The cist was built of yellow sandstone slabs, the cover stone being 1ft below the surface. It contained the inhumations of two young women, both under thirty-five years of age; their positions strongly suggest that they were buried at the same time. They were accompanied by a beaker, of Clarke's N3 type, and a flint knife, which are now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession nos EQ 477 and EQ 480 respectively). The cist was also donated to the NMAS, but the slabs disintegrated due to frost damage.
