Archaeology Notes

NT77SW 14 c. 73 73.

A short cist was found on 18th May 1939 by Mr W Macnaughton, tenant of the Board of Agriculture's Lot 114 at Thornton (NT 73 73) when ploughing. The findspot was on the crest of a low ridge running parallel to the Thornton Burn about 20 yds S of the stream, but not quite at the highest point of the ridge, which rises a few feet to the W. There was no trace of a cairn. The cist contained the bones of a child, 3 to 5 years old, accompanied by a beaker, of Clarke's N2 type, which was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: EG 74).
