Archaeology Notes

NT76NE 7 778 694.

A large slab of ochre, with one side hollowed by rubbing, was found in a cist at Chesterknowes, Chapelhill, Cockburnspath, in 1913.

J H Craw 1929.

Cist 42" x 22" x 24" found on bank above Tower Burn near south-east corner of Mid Chesterfield, and some 200 yards south-east from the site of Chesterfield Fort (Berwick 4 NW 5). The ochreous stone measured 8" x 4". The cist was left intact.

J H Craw 1923.

The shape of the yellow ochreous stone was suggestive of much rubbing on the human body or some other object.

J H Craw 1923.

At NT 7765 6937, just outside the SW corner of Mid Chesterfield, there is a heap of stones which is largely from field clearance (this was confirmed by Mr John Taylor, Grieve at Chapelhill Farm, Cockburnspath), but underneath there are other stones, partly turf-covered, and very much suggesting a cairn.

The position is 200 yards SSE of Mid Chesterfield earthwork (Berwick 4 NW 5)and it accords reasonably well with the description in (J H Craw 1923). The cist, of which Mr Taylor knew nothing, may have been found in this cairn, if such it was.

Visited by OS (CJP) 27 September 1956.

The cist was found in the area centred on NT 7786 6947. There are no indications of a cairn or cist at the site described by Pedley, which lies outside the SW corner of the field known as 'Mid Chesterfield', except for two piles of field-clearance stones, with no evidence of an older cairn beneath either.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 27 April 1966.

Listed.

RCAHMS 1980.
