Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Greenlaw is mentioned in the fourteenth-century monastic rentals of Kelso Abbey, which indicates that there was an ecclesiastical site of some sort here, though it is not clear exactly what existed at this location.

In the medieval period, abbeys were also landowners on a very large scale. The holdings of Kelso Abbey included farms, salt-pans and brewhouses in addition to churches, smaller chapels, places of retreat and hospitals.
