A sandstone dovecot, built in 1749, is situated at the end of the long Marchmont Avenue, a landscaped feature designed by the celebrated architect William Adam. The mason responsible for the building of this circular dovecot was James Williamson.
Built of coursed sandstone rubble masonry, the single-chambered dovecot now lacks its door but still contains 352 timber nesting boxes, and the central 'potence', a comparatively rare survival. This post, which had projecting arms to which a ladder was attached, could swivel round, allowing access to the higher nesting boxes.
