Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Pinnaclehill is a natural mound overlooking the River Tweed. In 1946, during vegetation clearance, a number of slabs, representing the remains of at least two cists, were found on the summit of the hill. These were recognised by the owners as being of archaeological significance.

Excavation suggested that the slabs noted during the clearance work might have been the remains of one, or possibly two, cists from which some disarticulated bone was recovered. An undisturbed cist lay beneath, capped by a thick stone slab. The cist was trapezoidal in shape and contained the near intact skeleton of an adult male, in a crouched position. Detailed study of the skeleton from the undisturbed cist showed that this was a tall, fairly strong man who stood about 1.73m in height and had died in middle age.

Cists, Pinnaclehill (Site). Immediately within the entrance to the policies of Pinnaclehill there stands a natural mound overlooking the Tweed from a distance of about 180 yds. Excavation in the summit of this mound, carried out in 1946, revealed the disturbed remains of one, or perhaps two, cisted graves close to the surface, with a third cist, of presumably earlier date, at a lower level. A full account of these remains has been published, with illustrations, (C S T Calder 1949) and it is sufficient to record here that the lower cist contained a male skeleton in the contracted position and represented a typical interment of the Early Bronze Age.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 9 December 1946.

The mound is at NT 7313 3340. Only a large slab standing upright on the southern rim is to be seen.

Visited by OS (RDL) 28 November 1963.

The large slab noted by the OS surveyor in 1963 measures 0.9m in height, 0.8m in width and is 0.15m in thickness.

Visited by OS (AS) January 1992.
