Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Built in the early nineteenth century, Wooden House is situated to the south-east of Kelso, and occupies a vantage point overlooking the River Tweed, giving its main rooms a fine view.

Wooden House is built in a castellated style, designed to have the character of a medieval castle. The wings which flank the main block have been designed to resemble towers and feature battlements running along their tops and the whole building is constructed of ashlar. To give the main door added prominence, the central bay stands slightly forward, and this is also decorated with corbels and battlements.

The castellated th/eme continues at the rear of the house, with battlements along the tops of the projecting wings and the main block of the house. A single-storeyed service block, containing a kitchen and store rooms, abuts the south-eastern corner of the house. A stable block lies to the south of the house.
