Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Edenhall was erected in the late nineteenth century, and is built of stone with a slated roof.

The house was built for the Swinburne family, and originally had a turreted porch over the main entrance, which was removed in the 1950s. A range of stable buildings lies a short distance away, and the walled garden to the rear of the house contains an orchard.

The house was requisitioned by the government during World War I, and was used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers. An album featuring photographs of the house during this time is kept at Edenhall Hospital, Musselburgh, which was named after this house.
