Ormiston Castle (Site).
In 1523 the "fayre tower called Ormeston" met the same fate as Moss Tower (No.214), and in 1544 the "barmkeyn or Ormeston" was burnt. There are no structural remains.
RCAHMS 1956, visited 22 March 1933.
At the site of Ormiston Castle there is an amorphous mound, at the NE corner of which part of a circular foundation course can be traced, probably a corner tower of the barmkin.
To the east and south numerous enclosures, banks and a pond can be seen, undoubtedly associated with the castle.
Visited by OS(RD) 1 December 1967.
Field Visit (1996 - 2003)
Russell Coleman managed an Historic Scotland funded project to record medieval moated sites in Scotland. Gazetteers were produced for each regional council area between 1996 and 2002 with an uncompleted overall review in 2002-03. The results of the first year of the project were published in Tayside and Fife Archaeological Journal, Volume 3 (1997).
