Archaeology Notes

(NT 7740 2606) Linton Tower (LB) (Site of)

OS 6"map, (1957).

The remains of this stronghold, recorded from the 12th century to its destruction in 1523, occupy a strong position on a knoll. They consist of the outer perimeter wall, clearly traceable as a low grassy mound on the south and parts of the east and west side, and a central crater.

The site was excavated under the auspices of the Kelso Antiquarian Society and traces of a building of two phases were found on the east side of the crater.

The excavators concluded that these were the foundations of an ecclesiastical building attached to the tower.

L Lawson 1957, RCAHMS 1956.

NT 7740 2609. The top of this natural knoll shows the amorphous indications of previous occupation but there are no definite traces of the tower to be seen. The knoll is steeply sloped on its south side and there are the remains of a broad, shallow ditch skirting its base on its NE side.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 1 December 1967.
