(NT 7642 1341) Enclosure (NR)

OS 6" map, (1962).

This scooped enclosure is situated on the W slope of Hangingshaw Hill. Its lower part consists of a scooped court, 70' by 40' and 7' in depth, scarped at the back and walled in front. The wall, a stony bank with two gaps in the W side, runs up to the back of the court on the N side, while on the S side it borders a passage 20' in width which runs up to another court about 35' in diameter. The rest of the enclosure has been ploughed away. In the N part of the lower court the foundations of a building, 42' in length by 9' and 7' in width at the N and S ends respectively, are marked out by large stones somewhat widely spaced. RCAHMS, visited 1947.

This 'enclosure', which is as described, is a habitation site of the scooped homestead class.

Visited by OS (JLD) 11 August 1960 and (DWR) 25 July 1973.

No change to the previous information.

Visited by OS (BS) 8 September 1976.

Scooped Settlement; Farmstead

Hownam ph.

This scooped settlement is situated in rough pasture on the SSW flank of Hangingshaw Hill. Roughly oval on plan, it measures 33m from E to W by 30m transversely internally.

The settlement is defined on the E (where it has been levelled into the slope) by no more than a scarp but elsewhere by a stone-faced bank which measures 2.2m in thickness and up to 1m in height on the NNW where it is best preserved. The bank is broken on the W by two gaps, the more northerly of which has probably been the entrance.

A scarp 1.8m high divides the interior into two portions of roughly equal size. The lower (W) portion has been a yard and within it there are the fragmentary footings of a rectangular building. The upper (E) portion is largely obscured by a dense growth of bracken but within it there are the fragmentary footings of a further two rectangular buildings.

(KALE99 153)

For the unenclosed settlement 120m to the ENE see NT71SE 76.

Visited by RCAHMS (RJCM, DCC), 21 October 1999.
