Kielhope Law
Palisaded Settlement; Rig and Furrow; Cultivation Terraces

This palisaded settlement is situated at the W end of the summit of Kielhope Law and is surrounded by the remains of rig cultivation, with terraces to the NE. Roughly sub-rectangular on plan, it measures 62m from NW to SE by 42m transversely within a palisade trench. The palisade trench has been removed by rig cultivation on the N side and there are further gaps on the E, S and NW. Another palisade trench can be traced running NE to SW across the interior of the settlement. Traces of at least seven ring-ditch houses are also visible within the interior measuring between 10m and 13.1m in overall diameter, they are defined by shallow ditches up to 2.7m in width and 0.3m in depth. One of the houses (NT 78355 14210) appears to have the SE side removed by the construction of a secondary palisade trench. There is further evidence of a secondary trench running for 7m parallel to the interior palisade trench that runs across the centre of the settlement.
For the rig cultivation to the S see NT71SE 22. To the N of the settlement, broad rig cultivation extends around the N slopes of Kielhope Law over an area of around 16ha. A small area of cultivation terraces are located on the steep NE-facing slopes of Kielhope Law, centred at NT 7851 1440. About 150m to the E of the settlement recent aerial photographs show cord rig extending over an area of about 1.5ha.
