Archaeology Notes

NT71SE 16 7709 1417 to 7712 1438.

(NT 7709 1417 - NT 7712 1438) Earthwork (NR)

OS 6" map, (1962).

This linear earthwork runs N-S along the top of a saddle and across the line of a modern road. In its N part the work consists of a ditch with a bank on either side, and in its S part, of a ditch with a bank on its E side only; it is possible, however, that an original W bank may have been destroyed by cultivation here. Its total length, over the gap made by the road, is about 240 yds. The slighter bank, without a ditch, that runs SE from the S end of the earthwork seems to be a field dyke of later date.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1947.

As described above.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 7 September 1960.

No change.

Linear Earthwork; Field Boundary; Building

NT 77099 14166

The linear earthwork is broadly as described in the 1956 inventory on the date of visit. The earthwork is however aligned from SSW-NNE and extends for a distance of about 220m from NT 7709 1417 to NT 7717 1438. From the S end of the earthwork, a field boundary extends S for a distance of about 75m from NT 7709 1417 to NT 7711 1409. Built into the W side of the southernmost bank there are the remains of a building. This building (NT 77106 14119) measures 8.7m from N to S by 4.7m transversely; the E wall is formed by the bank.

Visited by RCAHMS (MFTR) 4 September 1999, with additional information from RCAHMS (BM) 8 June 2012
