(NT 7776 1927) Hownam parish church is mentioned in 1185, and was the property of Jedburgh Abbey in 1220.

Once cruciform, when remodelled and shortened in 1752, this church became a rectangular cell. The fabric, extensively repaired in 1844 and later, is now virtually modern, but in the S wall there remains a round-headed doorway which dates from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
The earliest tombstone in the churchyard dates from the late 17th century.
RCAHMS 1956, visited 1948.
This church, which is as described, is still in use.
