NT 6578 7021. A disturbed turf-covered mound 7.0m in diameter and 0.4m high. Some stone is evident in its damaged east side but there is no trace of a kerb nor positive indication that it is a burial mound. The mound may conjecturally be associated with the hill name Watch Law.

Activities

Field Visit (17 June 1913)

About 60 yards south-south-west of the hillock known as Watch Law, and immediately to the west of the cart track to Friardykes, and 1 3/8 miles to the north by west of the latter place, is a cairn, 20 feet in diameter and 1 ½ feet in height. It stands at an elevation of 1150 feet above sea-level.

RCAHMS 1924, visited 17 June 1913.

Desk Based Assessment (August 2010 - January 2014)

CFA Archaeology Ltd undertook an archaeological impact assessment at the proposed Phase III of the Crystal Rig Wind Farm resulting from the construction, operation and ultimate decommissioning of the proposed turbines and infrastructure.

Thirty-four cultural heritage constraints have been identified within the proposed development area. One significant direct impact has been predicted from the construction of the proposed development. A direct impact of moderate significance, which is predicted upon area or rig and furrow cultivation remains (27) as a result of the construction of the construction compound, will be offset by a scheme of mitigation works including detailed surveying and a trial trenching evaluation which will lead to the accrual of archaeological data.

CFA Archaeology Ltd.

Desk Based Assessment (6 October 2010 - 1 July 2015)

Proposed extension to Crystal Rig Wind Farm, Lammermuir Hills, East Lothian. The cultural heritage assessment forms part of the Environmental Statement. The assessment identifies all cultural heritage features within the proposed wind farm extension, through desk-based assessment and reconnaissance field survey, and key external receptors within the vicinity of the development. Cultural heritage features identified by the assessment relate to medieval and post medieval agricultural exploitation of the landscape.
