Archaeology Notes

NC65NW 17 602 575.

A depopulated settlement comprising two 'longhouses', the larger measuring 32m by 4m, also associated smaller footings and enclosures. The ruins stand up to 1m high but are generally lower. Low stone field walls in the vicinity enclose formerly cultivated areas marked by small clearance heaps and very vague traces of rig and furrow. The whole area is now covered by heather, The feature at NC 6021 5756 is the remains of a later rifle range butt.

This township comprises two unroofed long buildings, three unroofed buildings, two enclosures and some field walls as depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherlnad 1878, sheet xvii). Two unroofed long buildings (one of 2 and one of 3 compartments), three unroofed buildings, one enclosure and the remains of field walls are depicted on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1962).
