(Name: NT 6917 6305) Site of (NAT) Harehead Castle (NR)

OS 6" map (1854)

Harehead Castle formerly stood in what is now the stackyard adjoining Harehead farmhouse. It was formerly a residence of the Earls of Hyndford, and is shown on Forrest's (1801) map as 'Castle (in ruins)'. Mr G Dods, whose family have farmed this area for over a century, states that the castle was burned down about a century ago, his uncle being an eye-witness of that event. There is no tradition in the country concerning it, and from the absence of any written account, it cannot have been a place of strength.

Name Book 1853.
