(NT 6025 5014) Enclosure (NR)
OS 25"map, (1965).
The remains of a fort (see plan RCAHMS 1915, fig.151). It was excavated by Lady John Scott about 1870, but no relics were found, nor is it the case, as was stated (HBNC 1904) that there were indications of chambers in the thickness of the walls.
RCAHMS 1915, visited 1908.
This earthwork is greatly obscured by dense vegetation and a wood. The banks are just traceable as shown on the RCAHMS plan, and are approximately 3.0 m broad and 0.6m high, where visible. The larger enclosure to the NE is a small elevated flat-topped area, with rig and furrow crossing it. There is no suggestion in the parts visible of anything resembling dwellings within or built into the walls. It occupies a non-defensive position on top of a low ridge.
Visited by OS (JD) 2 May 1955.
NT 6025 5014. Generally as described by the previous authorities. The E half of the enclosure can be traced as a mutilated stony scarp now reduced for most of its length to a few protruding stones. The W half can be traced with difficulty, within an area of reafforestation, as a broad, stony rampart in places about 6.0 m wide and 0.5 m high.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (WDJ) 6 November 1963.
What are probably the remains of a settlement occupy a knoll about 200m N of the old stables at Spottiswoode. Roughly oval on plan, it measures about 60m by 36m within a wall spread up to 4m in thickness. Within the interior there is a smaller enclosure measuring 30m by 27m within a thick wall which merges with the outer wall on the NW and SW.
RCAHMS 1980, visited 1979.
