Accessing Scotland's Past Project

St Michael's, the parish church of Gordon, dates from 1897, a rebuilding of an eighteenth-century church, which in turn replaced a medieval predecessor.

The church bell, inherited from its eighteenth-century predecessor, is inscribed 'David Brown minister at Gordon ordered me to be fovnded Anno 1714 and refovnded me 1725. R M Fec', the latter part indicating that the bell was cast by Robert Maxwell.

The church is simply designed: it is rectangular on plan, and has a bell-cote surmounting the western gable while the vestry is housed in a small northern aisle. A plaque above the main entrance commemorates the rebuilding of the church in 1897.

The church of Gordon is recorded in the 12th century, although the existing building appears to be entirely modern. During the installation of a heating apparatus in the 19th century, a pit containing 70 skulls 'and a number of thigh bones' was found, and several complete skeletons aligned from E to W were uncovered. Gordon Parish Church: rebuilt 1897. Listed C.

This church remains in ecclesiastical use.

Visited by RCAHMS (RJCM/JRS) 30 September 1993.
