Archaeology Notes

NT63SW 8 6182 3165.

(NT 6182 3165) Roman-dressed Slab; Mertoun: About 70 yards from the SE end of Mertoun House, set as a seat is a red, sandstone slab 3ft 8 inches long by about 2 feet wide with a moulded bevelled edge containing a rope ornament as its central member. This slab is of Roman workmanship and was brought from the earth-house (NT53SE 19) discovered near Newstead, Roxburgh, in 1845.

RCAHMS 1915; J A Smith 1855.

The remains of a stone seat were located at NT 6182 3165. The top slab is of grey stone but its supports are red sandstone. The bevelled edging could not be seen because the seat is almost completely covered by earth and vegetation.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 September 1962.
