Archaeology Notes

NT63SW 14 c. 617 317.

A bronze tripod cooking pot of medieval date, 9 3/4ins in height and 6 1/2 ins across the mouth, was found in digging a grave at Mertoun House (NT 617 317 - adjacent to Mertoun Parish Church). On the outer side are three peculiar markings in relief, probably intended for letters. It was in the National Museum Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1894, on loan from T Scott ARSA, Bowden, in whose collection it is noted in 1895.

G F Black 1894; T Scott 1897.

No further information was obtained during field investigation.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 September 1962.
