The steading at Smailholm farm is an early nineteenth century building which was originally used as a posting inn.
The New Statistical Account of 1845 states that a stretch of turnpike road ran through the village. The inn, which overlooked it, would have provided welcome relief to travellers, giving them a place to rest or change horses. However, the author of the account, the local minister, Thomas Cleghorn, mentioned that the village had an inn and an alehouse, and observed that 'the effect on the morals of the people is distinctly unfavourable'.
