(NT 6500 2058) Cross (NR) (Site of)
OS 25" map, (1921).
The ancient cross of Jedburgh disappeared before the encroachments of the last century. (New Statistical Account [NSA, J Purves: written 1834] 1845), Laidlaw illustrates part of a sculptured stone unicorn which had surmounted it. The cross-base described on NT62SE 16 (qv) appears to have stood in this position for a time before its removal to Hartrigge House.
RCAHMS 1956, visited 1933; W Laidlaw 1905.
NT 6499 2057. At the site of the cross is a stone set in the road inscribed, 'Site of Mercat Cross'. A fragment of the sculptured stone unicorn noted by Laidlaw is in the museum of Queen Mary's House (NT62SE 29).
Visited by OS (EGC) 7 January 1963.
