(NT 6477 2467) Chapel (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map, (1957).

Burial Ground (LB)

OS 6" map, Roxburghshire, 1st ed.,(1859).

No structural remains of the chapel survived in 1937 (RCAHMS 1956), but in 1859 (Name Book 1859) the course of the walls could be traced as '... irregular ridges of grass ...', and the cemetery contained a great number of tomb-stones which had been dug up and re-erected. The New Statistical Account (NSA) states that Spittal had parish status (NSA [Rev A Milroy] 1845) and Lizar's map (W H Lizars 1851-5), based on the Origines (OPS 1851) shows the parish church symbol here. Innes (OPS 1851), however, says that, previous to its amalgamation with Crailing in 1606 (D E Easson 1957), Spittal formed part of Jedburgh parish and was served by a chaplain.

RCAHMS 1956.

There are no traces of this chapel in the old burial ground, now overgrown with bushes and young trees. A few tomb-stones can be seen protruding above the rank grass.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 20 January 1967.
