Archaeology Notes

NT61SE 13 661 128.

NT 662 132 - NT 661 126: A linear earthwork runs in a more or less southerly direction for just under 500 yds from near the head of the E branch of Shaw Burn; its course curves gently but shows minor irregularities. Its apparent N end has been damaged by traffic on an old track, and it is consequently impossible to say whether the work originally extended farther N, to run into the Shaw Burn lower down, or returned E into what is now arable land. Its S end, from a point 37 yds S of the SW corner of the enclosed ground, has also been destroyed; its line is continued by a surface drain, but from a point some 50 yds away towards the SW faint traces of a much wasted ditch and bank can be seen running SW for about 70 yds. It is probable that the S end originally rested somewhere on the Kiln Burn.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1947.

The greater part of this earthwork lies in a fir plantation. It consists mainly of a much spread and mutilated bank, some 4.0m broad by 0.7m high with a ditch on its W side. It is probably the remains of an old boundary bank of no great age and thus has not been surveyed.

Visited by OS(RD) 21 February 1967.
