Archaeology Notes

NT61NE 10 676 185.

A chapel stood in close proximity to Scraesburgh (NT 676 185) though its exact site cannot now be pointed out.

Name Book 1859.

The chapel at Scraesburgh is described as "lying in a recess of the forest to the E of the Jed Water". It is probable that the principal part of the town was near the W end of the lake of Scraesburgh, near to where the present Mossburnford stands (NT 667 161).

A Jeffrey 1857.

It was given to Jedburgh Abbey by David I (1124-53).

G Chalmers 1810.

Mr R Laing of Kersgeugh, near Jedburgh, believes that the site of

the chapel was probably at NT 6719 1737 where a barn, formerly a school, stands. However, he has no evidence to verify this and cannot be certain.

Visited by OS(RD) 24 January 1967.
