Activities

Field Visit (11 December 1992)

NT60NW 3.00 6440 0988.

This archaeological landscape surrounds the complex settlement at Slack's Tower. On the slopes to the S and W there are a building and enclosure, several periods of field boundaries, rig, stock enclosures and a plantation enclosure. Traces of archaeological remains have been removed on the E by recent afforestation and on the NW by agricultural improvements.

In the Hearth Tax Return for Southdean parish of 1691 three hearths are listed at "Slaks" (SRO E69/21/1) and the settlement is depicted on Blaeu's map of Teviotdale, based upon Pont (Blaeu 1654), but it is absent from 18th century maps (Roy 1747-55 and Stobie 1770).
