(NT 54763 79225) Dovecot (NR)
OS 6" map (1968)
Dovecot, East Fortune: At the roadside, now free-standing but once part of a range of buildings, there is a dovecot in the upper part of a lectern, measuring 19ft by 16ft and 24ft high, with a slate roof and plain sloping gables. The random rubble walls are about 2ft thick; on the rear parapet are stone ball ornaments, a weathervane and socket. There six entry holes in a row midway up the roof, once possibly more. In the interior are 348 nests made of bricks and tiles; 35 large recesses in the lower storey are probably for hens. It is in good repair outside, poor inside; many pigeons.
J Whitaker 1938
East Fortune House (at NT 5472 7929) is dated 1768; this dovecot is of the same period. It is in the S wall of what seems to have been an 18th century steading.
C McWilliam 1978
This dovecot is as described by the previous authorities.
