(NT 5567 6633) Dovecot (NAT)

OS 6" map (1957)

This roofless dovecot, standing in a field close to Castle Mains farmhouse, measures 19ft square over rubble walls 35 ins thick; the entrance is in the S wall. It has a single string course. Originally, it contained 962 nest holes, made of stone, on each wall of the interior but most of them have been demolished on the S side and the two lower rows are blocked up. There are no dove hole entrances; presumably pigeons formerly entered by a dormer in the roof, which has been of slate and stone slabs.
