Archaeology Notes

NC63NE 52 6549 3821.

At NC 6549 3821, towards the east end of Loch Naver and some 70.0m from the nearest point on the southern shore, is a crannog of bare, rubble stones. It is wholly submerged for most of the winter, and was partially so at the time of investigation being 0.9m maximum height. Large stones around the rim of the crannog may be the remains of a retaining wall, indicating dimensions of 21.0m N-S by 18.0m E-W. The stones of the crannog rise abruptly from the bed of the loch, which is at least 2.0m deep around the structure; no causeway can be seen.
