Archaeology Notes

NT53SW 23 5175 3414 to 5035 3412.

(NT 5175 3414 - NT 5035 3412) A "military road" led from Castlestead (NT53SW 8) to the Tweed at Nether-Barnford. (Netherbarns Ford: NT 5035 3412 on OS 6" 1938) Where most entire, the "road" was 20 ft broad, with a deep ditch on either side. This road has been almost obliterated by recent improvements, but Mr Kinghorn (MS survey and sketch 1803) states that the remains were sufficiently distinct to show its direction to the passage of the Tweed, at Nether Barnford.

This "military road" is comparable with the earthwork described on Lin 530 (originally published as "Military Road").

G Chalmers 1810; A Milne 1743

No trace of the course of this linear earthwork was found.
