Archaeology Notes

NT53SE 33 NT 56020 34640

NT 558 345. Part of what may well be part of a small Roman temporary camp was found, defined by two lengths of ditch at right angles, each upwards of 200' long, with a curved angle between them.

J K St Joseph 1961

The site lies on flat ground beside the River Tweed. There is nothing to be seen on the ground.

Publication Account (17 December 2011)

The enclosure at Millmount lies less than 1km to the west of the Roman fort and camps at Newstead. First recorded in 1960 by St Joseph from the air (1961: 121), some 150m of a north side, a rounded corner angle and 50m of the east have been visible through cropmarks. While it is not definitely a Roman camp, its proximity to Newstead increases the probability that it is. A second enclosure within the site does not have the appearance of a Roman structure.
