(NT 5019 1442) A tablet on the outside wall of the Tower Knowe shop of Messrs. F and A Lawrence, was unveiled 28th May 1952. It reads:- "Near this spot stood the Auld Brig of Hawick, built in the 13th century: Demolished in 1851". The bridge consisted of two semi-circular arches, one large and one small (leading from the High Street to the parish church (NSA 1845)) over the Slitrig, separated by a nine foot central pier which was built into the rocks above normal water level. The bridge was of irregular width, seven feet at the widest, and was thus only suitable for pedestrians and horse traffic.
