Archaeology Notes

NT51NW 23 centred on 5430 1774.

(NT 5430 1774) Roman Temporary Camp, Eastcote: Aerial photography has revealed crop marks of a temporary camp in a typically Roman choice of terrain W of Denholm. The course of the ditch has been established for all of the NE and SE sides, much of the SW side, and the rounded S and E angles. It measures axially 1,200 ft NE-SW by about 1,000 ft transversely. Part of the camp near the W angle has been eroded by the river.

J K St Joseph 1961; 1965

There are no surface remains of this camp. The site falls in a ploughed field.

Visited by OS (BS) 10 April 1975

Further aerial photographs taken by the RCAHM in 1976 and 1980.

Activities

Watching Brief (19 March 2018 - 26 March 2018)

Midshiels NT 5374 1766 and Eastcote NT 5421 1759. An archaeological watching brief was required by Connicks on behalf of their client SPIE during the refurbishment of an overhead powerline that passes through Midsheils and Eastcote, northeast of Hawick, Scottish Borders.

Several of the poles being replaced lie within areas known for cropmarks. Midshiel farm containing a possible ritual enclosure, and Eastcote being the site of a Roman temporary camp.

The pole replacements were successfully monitored with no significant archaeological finds or features being uncovered.

Publication Account

First recorded from the air in 1960 by St Joseph (1961: 122), the camp at Eastcote lies in a bend in the River Teviot, just north-east of Hawick. The camp of Cavers Mains lies on a ridge less than 1km to the south-east. Parts of all four sides have been recorded through cropmarks, but its north-west portion has been eroded by the river. The camp measured 348m from NNE to SSW by 322m transversely and enclosed just over 11ha (27 acres). Gaps in the cropmark on three of the sides may represent entrances.
